Miso Sazerac

A savory, spirit forward twist on the classic Sazerac. White miso syrup adds subtle sweetness and gentle salinity, creating a beautifully balanced and unexpected sip.

Because every drink deserves a beautiful moment.

A miso sazerac cocktail served in a lowball glass with a large clear ice cube, pale amber in color, and garnished with a lemon peel against a dark background.
Ingredients
  • 2 ounces rye whiskey or bourbon

  • 1 teaspoon white miso syrup

  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

  • Absinthe, for rinsing the glass

  • Lemon peel, for garnish

White Miso Syrup

  • ⅓ cup water

  • ⅓ cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon white miso

Instructions
  1. To make the white miso syrup, whisk together the water, sugar, and white miso in a small saucepan.

  2. Heat gently, stirring, until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

  3. Rinse a lowball or coupe glass with absinthe, then discard the excess.

  4. Add the rye or bourbon, white miso syrup, and Peychaud’s bitters to the prepared glass.

  5. Add a large ice cube and stir until well chilled and properly diluted.

  6. Express a lemon peel over the drink and garnish.

Notes from the Bar

White Miso Syrup

White miso makes a beautifully balanced simple syrup. Its gentle sweetness and subtle salinity round out spirit forward cocktails without overpowering them. We are big fans of how it adds depth while keeping the drink clean and composed.

Glassware Options

This cocktail can be served stirred and straight up in a coupe or Nick and Nora glass, or over a large ice cube in a lowball or highball glass. Both presentations work well depending on the moment.

Spirit Choice

Rye whiskey brings classic spice and structure, while bourbon creates a slightly rounder, softer finish. Choose based on your preference.

Absinthe Rinse

A quick rinse is all you need. Swirl the absinthe around the glass, then discard. It should perfume the drink, not dominate it.

Ritual Tip

Take a moment savor the citrus oils after expressing the lemon peel and before dropping it in. It awakens your senses and sets the tone for the first sip.
