COCKTAIL RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon

  • 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice

  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice

  • 1/2 oz simple syrup

  • 1/2 small rosemary sprig

  • 1 dash Angostura bitters, optional

  • Half grapefruit wheel, for garnish

  • Fresh rosemary sprig, for garnish

COCKTAIL METHOD

  1. Add the simple syrup and rosemary to a cocktail shaker and muddle gently to release the oils.

  2. Add the bourbon, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and bitters if using.

  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well for 12-15 seconds.

  4. Double strain into a rocks glass over fresh crushed ice.

  5. Tuck the half grapefruit wheel between the ice and the glass so it stands upright, and garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig.

GRAPEFRUIT MATTERS

Grapefruit varies a lot in sweetness. Ruby red tends to be sweeter, while white grapefruit is more tart. If yours is on the sweeter side, reduce the simple syrup to 1/4 oz. Fresh juice makes a big difference here, so skip the bottled stuff if you can.

GENTLE ON THE ROSEMARY

Rosemary is strong, so a light press with the muddler is all it needs. Muddle too hard and it can turn bitter and piney. For more rosemary flavor: use a full small sprig. For a subtle hint: skip the muddle and shake the sprig in whole.

WHY DOUBLE STRAIN

Straining through a fine mesh strainer catches the little rosemary bits and grapefruit pulp, so the drink stays clean and smooth.

BOURBON CHOICE

A smooth, mid-proof bourbon lets the grapefruit shine. A wheated bourbon keeps things soft and mellow, while a high-rye bourbon adds a little spice that plays nicely with the rosemary.
