NOTES FROM THE BAR
Heads up: We may earn a small commission on products we’ve linked here. We only recommend the real-deal favorites from our kitchen.
CRÈME DE CACAO CHOICE
We tested this with Drillaud Crème de Cacao Dark, 25% ABV, which is relatively dry compared with many sweeter brands. Because of that, our version benefited from a scant barspoon of simple syrup. With a sweeter crème de cacao, omit the simple syrup at first and add it only if needed.
CHOCOLATE BITTERS
Chocolate bitters are optional. They deepen the cacao flavor without turning the Old Fashioned into a dessert drink.
BOURBON CHOICE
A bourbon with some spice and vanilla notes plays especially well against the cacao and orange here. Nothing too light or delicate, this drink can handle some backbone.
EXPRESSING THE PEEL
Hold the orange peel skin-side down over the glass and give it a firm pinch to release the citrus oils across the surface of the drink. This is what carries the orange aroma into every sip.
