COCKTAIL RECIPE
Makes 1 cocktail
2 oz bourbon
1 1/2 oz apple butter syrup
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
4 oz ginger beer
Make the apple butter syrup using the recipe in Notes from the Bar. Fill a copper mug or tall glass with crushed ice and add the bourbon, syrup, and lime juice. Top with ginger beer and stir gently to combine. Garnish with thin apple slices, candied ginger, or a cinnamon stick.
NOTES FROM THE BAR
Heads up: We may earn a small commission on products we’ve linked here. We only recommend the real-deal favorites from our kitchen.
APPLE BUTTER SYRUP
Whisk together 1/4 cup apple butter and 1/4 cup hot water until completely smooth. This makes enough syrup for 2 cocktails, so double it for a larger batch and refrigerate any leftovers. Unlike a standard simple syrup, apple butter syrup is made with equal parts fruit and water, so it adds rich apple flavor and a silky texture rather than intense sweetness.
BOURBON MATTERS
A bourbon with a little rye spice, like Bulleit or Buffalo Trace, keeps this from tasting too soft against the apple butter and ginger beer.
COPPER MUG TIP
A copper mug isn't required, but it keeps the drink colder longer and is the classic presentation for anything in the mule family. → Link to our favorite copper mugs
GARNISH OPTIONS
Thin apple slices or an apple fan look beautiful against the copper, and a cinnamon stick adds a little extra warmth on the nose with each sip. Candied ginger is a nice touch if you want more ginger flavor without adding more ginger beer.
